Common Pipe Issues & Solutions in the Home with Squeaks, Inc.

Pipes are essentially the veins and arteries of the home, and water — its lifeblood. Water is always moving and being redirected to and from all rooms in the house through the pipes under significant pressure and varying speeds and temperatures. Unfortunately, if there are irregularities in the piping or if certain parts of the plumbing begin to weaken, there is a likely chance that pipe may crack, leak, burst and, potentially, flood rooms in the home in a very short amount of time.

To tackle these cracks and leaks before they do severe damage to your home, we at Squeaks, Inc. want to arm you with knowledge and provide exceptional plumbing maintenance and repair services.

Common Problems & Causes

Since pipes are metal, human-made products, they are not without their flaws, and they are indeed not impervious to all internal and external damage. The list below is by no means exhaustive, but it contains a few of the most common causes of cracked and leaky pipes.

  1. Advanced Corrosion
Pipe material does not last forever. Over time, it will begin to rust and eat away at the pipe wall and create openings where water may escape. Pipe corrosion is even more likely to occur in pipes over 30 years old because the materials of the past are not as advanced as they are today.
  2. High Water Pressure
If there is excess water pressure in the pipes, the water will continuously hit the pipe walls hard; this will eventually weaken the pipes and cause leaks, or, in extreme situations, the pipe may burst.
  3. Damage to Pipe Joints
The weakest parts of pipes are the joints, which are separate pieces of curved piping attached to straight pipes used to redirect water to other areas of the home. Since the joint stands alone on a collision course with highly-pressurized water, wear and tear on pipe joints is significantly more harmful than the wear and tear on the actual pipes, thus leaving the pipe joints and pipes vulnerable to cracks and leaks.
  4. Untreated Drain Blockages and Chemical Drain Cleaners
A common cause of damaged pipes is a simple drain clog. Though a clogged drain may seem a vaguely irritating inconvenience, obstructions may cause detrimental injury to your pipes in the future. If a clog happens to contain corrosive materials like household cleaners and chemicals, prolonged exposure of these substances to the pipes will eventually lead to pipe damage. This is also why we discourage the use of chemical drain cleaners - the chemicals eat away at the blockage and the pipes!
